Catherine's Own Work
The inherent beauty of words fascinates me, along with the fact we are saturated with text and communication in every aspect of out lives. I aim to take this and create works that will simultaneously calm and question the viewer. I often work in series with various scales and surfaces.
My text works utilise people's favourite words and also the private languages that various groups use. Choosing words that look or sound beautiful I create a visual sea of words. I use traditional writing equipment such as, typewriters and letter stamps in the initial development of my work. I further develop the text onto diverse surfaces including fragile Japanese tissue paper and robust textural slate.
As my work spans various disciplines I aim to seamlessly combine traditional methods with contemporary ones while crossing the boundaries of fine art and design. Although neither poet nor writer I am a collaborator and catalyst for those who participate in my work during its creation and later exhibition. My aim is that the resulting art works, as well as being visually appealing, will also promote discussion and interaction.
